Finally
I've probably surfed twice in the last eight months, since Abby has been born. It's quite pathetic. I miss surfing a lot but I do believe it has been an appropriate and worthy sacrifice to make for the family and with all of the minis
try endeavors that have been a part of my life in the past year. So I finally got to paddle out yesterday evening to let off some steam and celebrate the completion of my Master of Divinity. The south swell hit strong, and San Clemente State Beach was pumping some hefty waves last night with a light crowd. I loved getting back into the water, but paddling out into overhead beach break probably wasn't the best idea after being out for so long. In other words, I took a nice beating!
It was discouraging at first, and then I just accepted it as it should be and received this message of the ocean with humility: "Come to me all who are out of shape...Come to me all who have neglected your presence from me...and take this well deserved pounding to the head." After my first pounding, I made it back out into the lineup, frustrated. Then I took a breath, and laughed. What did I expect? A perfect in-and-out barrel with a celebratory cheer?

It has been a wonderful week for surf. Matthew was late for school on Wednesday because it was sooo good. When he signed in, he wrote "family business" on the excuse line. I believe Our Father takes great delight in our enjoyment of creation! Glad you're keeping up with the family business as well.
